Waking With the Birds
For the past week or so, something extraordinary has been happening. Well, extraordinary for me.
As someone who has had a lot of problems with sleep at different times throughout my life, I have suddenly been sleeping through the night, night after night. Quiet, peaceful sleep.
And not only that, I am waking up with the birds.
Some mornings I am awakened by the sound of their singing, other mornings I wake up just in time to hear the first songs begin.
But either way, my first experience of life in the morning now is the serenade of birds.
I don’t know my local birds yet. I’ve only lived here for two-and-a-half years. But it’s on my list to learn my local birds and be able to identify them by song. I understand there is something called bird language and I want to learn that too.
Years ago I learned of a product called Sonic Bloom that uses specially designed sound and nutrients to accelerate the growth and yield of crops. This method is based on the discovery that the sound of birdsong opens receptors in plants that allow them to receive nutrients. Morning birdsong apparently “wakes up” plants to begin their day of nourishment. As both plants and humans are living organisms, perhaps birdsong has a beneficial effect on humans too?
The morning birds are still serenading me as I sit here in my office typing. Now it’s 6:00. There is no other activity. Everyone else is still asleep. It’s just me and the birds.
I remember a time many years ago, when I first went to Germany. Munich, I think. I was staying right in the downtown area, which had many more trees and old buildings than the cities in the USA. The sound of birds singing woke me up. It was just before dawn. I looked at the clock. It was 4:00. That was the first time I experienced length of day being different at a different latitude.
I am very grateful to be living in a place where I can wake with the birds. I am grateful, number one, that birds are here and they are singing and, number two, that I am here to hear them.
DEBRA REDALIA, Co-Founder of Spirits Bright, became aware she was a spiritual being when her body was six years old, but didn't learn much about what that meant until she met soulmate Larry Redalia twenty-six years later. Together they have helped each other discover the characteristics of spirit and put them into practice in daily life. Since 2005, Debra and Larry have been writing Signs of Spirit stories—first person accounts of their true life adventures as spiritual belings. The are co-founders of Spirits Bright and The Signs of Spirit Project.
