Living in a Work of Art

Debra Redalia

Rugged shore on The Lost Coast of California

Yesterday when I stepped on to the beach, I looked around and suddenly saw how the Earth was constantly being changed by the water and the wind.

And immediately I thought. “Oh, the land is being sculpted into an art form by the elements.”

Great geologic forces had pushed land to the surface through great earthquakes, but then the wind and the water comes along andsmooths and softens the edges, and sculpts the land into forms.

Just as a human sculptor fashions a lump of clay into a vase or a bowl with artistic beauty, so too is the Creator of Life sculpting the planet into forms of artistic beauty with wind and water.

This is difficult to see in a city where the land has been covered with buildings, or in the country where natural land forms have been leveled into farms.

But standing here on the rugged coast of California, where mountains rise almost straight out of the sea, I can see how our Earth is formed by shifting land masses, and then jagged edges are sculpted by the wind and rain.

Just like a work of art. The act of creation is the same.

We are living within a supremely beautiful work of art that is more orderly and beautiful than anything created by industrial man.

It is the original work of art from which all other works of art are inspired.

We need to occasionally step out of our industrial world and experience the difference.

For more than 30 years we have been delving into the nature and activities of life together. Indeed, this has been and continues to be the very reason we are together. With delight, we research, explore, observe, and even wake each other up in the middle of the night to discuss how life functions and how we can function as life—even while living in the modern world. We each are different from the norm, but we are different in the same way, so we have been able to think outside of the ordinary together and find the extraordinary workings of life.
